Confirmation Instruction Lesson 5

The Apostles' Creed

Who Is God the Father?

Our God is an awesome God.

This lesson provides an opportunity to explore the awesome concepts we associate with God the Father - the wonder of his creation, his interest in mankind, the indescribable vastness of infinity, the boundlessness of his energy - and the boundlessness of his love.

We meet the God of the First Article of the Apostles' Creed, encounter the triune God of the Holy Trinity, read about the wonder of creation in "Pied Beauty," and in the story of Adam, and look at creation close up with hand lenses and prisms.

And we take some time to look at the beauty of fractals.

If there had been such a word in the Hebrew vocabulary, God might have said, "Let there be fractals," instead of "Let there be light." Fractals may be the true building blocks of the universe.

For adult confirmands, you might want to recommend "She Unnames Them" by Ursula LeGuin, collected in Out of the Garden: Women Writers on the Bible, edited by Christina Buchmann and Celina Spiegel, which leads us to speculate on a world where humanity is represented by the First Woman, rather than the First Man. The reference in the story's title is to God's instruction to Adam to name all the animals.
