We Care for Jesus through His People

Matthew 25: 31 - 46

Prisons in Bible times were quite different from those we know now. Prisoners were almost always dependent on family and friends for their food and clothing. If their friends did not bring them food in prison, they would starve to death.

Imprisonment was not usually a punishment for a crime. Prisoners were kept in jail until the times of their trials (no one was let out on bail) and after their convictions until their punishment or execution.

Prisoners were often held until a festival day (the emperor's birthday, for example) when they would all be killed together in a mass execution.

But unless their families and friends cared for them, they would die of neglect before that day. Jesus reminds us once again of how important it is for us to bring hope to the hopeless and comfort to those in great need.
