Twentieth Sunday of Pentecost

Jesus Teaches the Greatest Commandment

Matthew 22: 34 - 46

Mark 12: 28 - 37

Luke 10: 25 - 28

Luke 20: 41- 44

Leviticus 19: 17 - 18

In Jesus' lifetime, the Temple in Jerusalem was home to many lively discussions.

One of the questions asked of many rabbis was to recite the entire Old Testament while standing on one foot. Rabbi Hillel answered by quoting Leviticus 19: 18, to love others as much as you love yourself.

Jesus was asked this question in a different fashion - and his answer was a little different, too.

1. Who had Jesus been talking to?

[Jesus had been arguing with the Sadducees.]

2. What question did the teacher of the law ask Jesus?

[The teacher asked, "What is the most important commandment?"]

3. What did Jesus say was the most important commandment?

[Jesus said, "People of Israel, you have only one Lord and God. You must love him with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength."]

4. What did Jesus say was the second most important commandment?

[Jesus said, "Love others as much as you love yourself."]
