Confirmation Instruction Lesson 13

The Sacrament of Holy Communion

How Do We Receive the Lord?

We sing, " Oh, How Shall We Receive Thee, How Greet Thee Lord Aright?" (LBW 23) but just like the sacrament of Baptism, the sacrament of Holy Communion is not about us. It is about God.

We receive God with, through, and under the bread and wine, and even though we are ill-prepared, wrong-minded, or unworthy, God is still present, and nothing that we do or say can change that.

We follow Jesus through the passion of Holy Week, and we watch him institute the sacrament at his last meal with the disciples.

Now we are ready to write our own statements of faith, which we will present to the congregation before our confirmation.

And we make place mats to use at home to remind us of God's presence at every meal, on every occasion where two or three are gathered in his name.

The pastor may choose to take us on a field trip through a winery. A simple communion service there could be deeply moving.
